The Arguing Clay: Trusting God in Business
"What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying, ‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’?" – Isaiah 45:9
As business leaders, we thrive on control. We set goals, build strategies, and work tirelessly to create successful enterprises. But what happens when things don’t go according to plan? A failed investment, an unexpected downturn, or a door that refuses to open—these moments can shake our confidence and leave us questioning God’s role in our business journey.
It’s easy to trust God when everything is going smoothly. Yet, when we face obstacles or delays, we often become the “arguing clay,” resisting His process and questioning His wisdom. We assume we know better, that our plans are superior to His. But Isaiah 45:9 reminds us of a fundamental truth: We are not the Potter—we are the clay. God is shaping us, not to harm us, but to form us into something greater than we can imagine.
God’s Masterpiece in Business
The Apostle Paul builds on this idea in Ephesians 2:10: “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.”
This means we are not random entrepreneurs navigating life on our own; we are masterpieces being crafted for a purpose. Just like an artist refines his work, God is refining us—chiseling away pride, smoothing out rough edges, and strengthening our faith. This shaping process applies not only to our personal lives but also to our businesses. Our calling as businesspeople is a part of His divine plan.
But let’s be honest—being shaped is not always comfortable. Challenges in business can feel like setbacks, but in God’s hands, they are often setups for something greater.
When the Potter’s Hands Press In
God’s molding process often comes through challenges: financial struggles, leadership decisions, ethical dilemmas, and even failure. These pressures can feel overwhelming, leading us to ask, “God, why is this happening?” But just as a potter applies the right amount of pressure to mold the clay, God knows exactly what we need to become who He has called us to be.
Instead of resisting, what if we embraced the process? Instead of asking, “Why, God?”, what if we asked, “What are You teaching me?”
Our businesses matter to God. The work we do—the services we provide, the employees we lead, the clients we serve—all play a role in His greater purpose. And just as God is invested in our personal growth, He is invested in the success of our business, shaping it for His glory.
Surrendering to the Process
Surrender doesn’t mean giving up—it means trusting God’s plan even when we can’t see the full picture. True surrender in business looks like seeking His wisdom in decision-making, being open to unexpected opportunities, and trusting that He is working even in closed doors.
Here are three reminders for business leaders navigating uncertainty:
The Clay Doesn’t See the Final Design – We get frustrated when things don’t go as planned, but the Potter sees the masterpiece. Every challenge is part of the process.
Shaping Requires Pressure – Growth comes with challenges. Whether it’s a difficult business decision, an unexpected failure, or a waiting season, God is using these moments to refine and strengthen us.
God’s Plan is for Good – His hands are never careless. He molds with precision, shaping us into leaders who reflect His wisdom, integrity, and purpose.
Reflections: Letting God Do His Work in Your Business
Are you resisting God’s shaping in certain areas of your business?
Where do you feel the pressure of His hands right now?
How can you trust Him more in the process?
A Prayer of Surrender
Lord, You are the Potter, and I am the clay. Forgive me when I resist Your work in my life and business. I may not always understand Your ways, but I trust that You are shaping me for something greater. Help me to surrender to Your hands, knowing that Your plans for me are good. Thank You for making me new in Christ. Mold my business, my leadership, and my calling into the masterpiece You created them to be. Amen.
Final Thought
God is shaping us into something extraordinary—not just as individuals but as business leaders. Instead of arguing with the Potter, let’s trust His hands, knowing His craftsmanship is perfect, and His purpose for our work is beyond what we can imagine. Let’s lead our businesses with faith, knowing that when we surrender to His process, He will guide us toward something far greater than we ever planned.
